YO 257
Aloha and welcome to wreck diving Oahu, Hawaii .One of wrecks we have to offer on the beautiful island of Oahu, Hawaii, is the YO 257. Which also is one of the oldest the choral growth is quite substantial. You get to wrecks for the price of one. If we are going to see sharks the most likely place to do this is the other wreck the San Pedro. This is why we always swim across just to check it out current permitting.
This old navy yard oiler was specially prepared for SCUBA diving and deliberately sunk on the South Shore in 1989 Just off Waikiki. The YO 257 is an excellent for multilevel SCUBA diving. With a depth range of 110-55 ft./ 33-15 m. Navigation is easy, as the boat mooring is centered on the wreck. You will see good coral growth, sea turtles While SCUBA diving, on occasional white tip reef shark or spotted eagle ray. Multitudes of butterfly fish swim about as you descend to the wreck, giving you the feeling that you are SCUBA diving in a giant aquarium. Depending on the current, we may also visit a second wreck which runs parallel to the YO257 called the St. Pedro.
Our understanding the name Y0257 relates to its job. This vessel used to run around Pearl Harbor filling battleships and destroyers as they were at their moorings in Pearl Harbor. YO stands for yard Oiler (yes she was a floating gas can). I believe the number 257 is simply because it was the 257 one built.
Very easy wreck diving as their is a line from the surface all the way to the wreck. This makes your assets and descend easy. There are big holes which have been cut into the wreck all the way down both sides. Which makes penetrating this wreck very easy (if you can get lost in this wreck you are truly gifted). We can not guarantee diving this wreck there is a very strong current about 60% of the time which makes it undrivable. The days we try this wreck a professional will get into the water to tie the boat off and if the current is strong we will go to a different wreck. (the Sea Tiger)
This wreck is frequented by strange creatures (tourists) riding around in a glass bubble (Atlantis Submarine) It is amazing how many of them seem to be more interested in taking pictures of friendly SCUBA divers swimming around the wreck. Feel free to wave, but please, no obnoxious hand signals, do not moon the tourists nor attempt to squeegee the windows.... and yes these things have all been done hence the need to make the rulings ended with dire consequences!--ask Alex for details.
Don't forget we give you the FREE use of dive computers to maximise your bottom time. If you are good on air we will multilevel the dive we can get approximately 30 minutes dive time (we will not cut you off at 18 minutes because we have NO COMPUTERS) You can extend your bottom time by using NITROX (you do not need a certification to use NITROX as I am a NITROX certified instructor) We will give you the absolute maximum time possible. The restrictions are to leave the bottom with 800 PSI or when the COMPUTER REACHES ZERO. This is no decompression limits we will not be doing DECOMPRESSION DIVING. Remember this is recreational diving.
