KEWALO PIPE

Kewalo Pipe is an old storm drain (not a sewer pipe like some divers think) which was originally used to drain the marsh that Waikiki, now stands on. It was rendered useless with the construction of the Ala Wai Canal. For some strange reason, a ribbon of coral has grown on this concrete pipe, which goes all the way out to 60 ft. of water. At the deep end of the pipe, if you know where to look, there is a pair of red pipe fish which are related to the sea horse family, and demonstrates an interesting family dynamic where the males take care of the young. The reef along either side of the pipe is extremely healthy. We have occasionally seen large frog fish and the rarer dragon moray eel.
