Alex's Aquatic Adventures uses the vessel South Seas II for SCUBA diving adventures on the west side of Oahu. This vessel is 36 feet long and 14 feet wide, an ideal platform for SCUBA diving. There is a large swim step on the stern to make entry and exit into and out of the water quite easy.
This vessel leaves from the Waianae boat harbour, at around 9 AM each morning. Our pickup time in Waikiki is still 7 AM, as it takes anywhere from one hour too 1 hour 30 minutes to get to the west side from Waikiki.
I, Alex Mason, personally believe that the reef dives on the west side of the island are some of the best reef diving on the island of Oahu. They have three wrecks of note, the Mahi and two landing craft. The Mahi was a deliberate sinking in 1989 by UH to create an artificial reef. This vessel was a minesweeper during World War II. The landing craft are vessels similar to the one used in the movie "Private Ryan".
As I have said before, we do not have any World War II wrecks that are within recreational diving limits. There is one true wreck from World War II, unfortunately it happens to be the USS Arizona, which lies in an area that also happens to be designated as an active nuclear military base, ie. Pearl Harbor. Pick whichever words of these you like, the bottom line is, you are not allowed to dive here.
The SCUBA diving on the west side is for licensed divers only. The reason for this is sometimes the boat will do two deep dives depending on the weather. Most dives on the west side are in the 50 to 60 foot range. It is possible for us to do discover SCUBA diving on the west side, depending on weather, but unfortunately, it would be only one tank during the a.m. charter.
There are certain companies that claim to give you two tanks for Discover SCUBA diving in the morning. They forget to tell you that one dive is hanging on the line in 35 feet of water so you can just about see the wreck that in 90 feet of water--what a great dive.
This vessel is able to offer an afternoon charter for Discover SCUBA divers, which is two dives at two different locations in shallow water. The pickup time for this charter in Waikiki at approximately 11 AM, returning to Waikiki as late as 5:30 PM. Please be aware we need a minimum of three divers to go west and the price is a little more expensive. This is due to the extra cost in gas and time. No,it is not cheaper if you drive yourself, as we still have to get there with the equipment. One instructor Is unable to do two charters out west as he can on the south side.
minimum three scuba divers/surcharge for two divers $40
